The El Salvador Consulate in Atlanta is an official diplomatic mission of the Republic of El Salvador and was established on February 3rd, 2000. The Consulate oversees consular affairs for citizens and residents living in Georgia. It helps to promote, protect and defend the rights and interests of its citizens living or traveling outside their country.
History
El Salvador was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before the Spanish arrived. The name El Salvador means The Savior. This is because the country was originally named after Jesus Christ and His mother Mary in 1524 when it was discovered by Spanish explorers on their way to Guatemala. El Salvador became an independent nation on September 25th 182
El Salvador’s current government is a representative democratic republic with a presidential system. The president is both head of state and head of government, elected for a five-year term, renewable once. The legislative branch consists of a unicameral National Assembly which has 84 members who are also elected for five-year terms and can be renominated indefinitely.
