The Cuban Embassy in Washington, D.C. is the diplomatic mission of Cuba in the United States.
The embassy building consists of a three-story neoclassical house located between the Lithuanian and Polish embassies, in a neighborhood where the ambassadors’ residences in the U.S. capital were located. It also features the Hemingway Bar, inaugurated in 2011 and dedicated to the American writer Ernest Hemingway.
What is the Cuban Embassy in the United States?
From 1977, following an agreement between Fidel Castro and Jimmy Carter,7 until July 2015, the building functioned as the Interests Section of the Republic of Cuba in Washington, DC, representing Cuban interests in the U.S. The Cuban Interests Section and its counterpart, the U.S. Interests Section in Havana, functioned as sections of the respective embassies in Switzerland, but operated independently in all but protocol. The two countries did not have formal diplomatic relations until 2015, with these sections acting as “de facto embassies.” Between 1991 and 2015 Switzerland was Cuba’s protective power in the United States.
